Roman Monarchy covers the period from the foundation of Rome by Romulus in 753 BC to its abolition during the revolution of 509 BC.
Seven kings ruled (4 mythical reigns and 3 historical reigns):
1) Romulus from 753 to 715 BC, of Latin origin (shared power with Titus Tatius for 5 years before reigning alone again): creation of the first pomerium, tribes, curiae, and the Senate. War against the Sabines (Mythical)
2) Numa Pompilius from 715 to 673 BC: of Sabine origin (Mythical), a peaceful king
3) Tullus Hostilius from 673 to 640 BC: of Latin origin (Mythical), a king focused on war, construction of the Curia Hostilia
4) Ancus Marcius from 640 to 616 BC: of Sabine origin (Mythical), elected in 640 by the Roman people, a warrior king (protecting his city) and builder (first wooden bridge over the Tiber); He made Lucius Tarquin one of his legatees
5) Tarquin the Elder from 616 to 575 BC: first Etruscan king of Rome, religious and urban policy (Circus Maximus, Cloaca Maxima, and Temple of Jupiter) these constructions do not only show a legend, assassinated by the sons of Ancius Marcus
6) Servius Tullius from 575 to 535 BC, adoptive son of Tarquin, "3rd founder" of Rome, new pomerium, censitary system, assassinated by Tarquin the Proud
7) Tarquin the Proud from 535 to 509 BC: tyrannical reign, completion of the Temple of Jupiter, ousted from power by the people.
The accounts of ancient authors are more or less questioned by modern historical criticism, which highlights their low reliability due to legendary or anachronistic elements, and their biased character idealizing the early kings to vilify the last Tarquin.
It is during the Roman Monarchy that institutions, socio-political development, and cults were formed.
A period that lasted 244 years and during which the future capital of the Roman Empire reached a population of over 130,000 inhabitants in the year -508.
Rome first conquered Latium, the Sabines, the Albans, and then faced the Etruscans... Before becoming the largest city in all of Italy.
